Can THC Vape Cause Cobalt Lung?A NEW Vaping Illness?

We've all heard of popcorn lung but
have you heard of cobalt lung a new
illness has been presented and today
we'll be looking at what this case means
before we get started make sure you
subscribe to the vein meat official
YouTube channel and don't forget to hit
that notification bell so you don't miss
out on future videos now let's get into
it a case study published on December
4th by the European respiratory journal
shows evidence of cobalt lung a rare
respiratory disease in a 49 year old
California woman the patient went to the
doctor do to her difficulty breathing
and chronic cough when initially
examined her condition came as a total
surprise to doctors due to its rarity
pathologist saw damaged lung cells that
had engulfed other lung cells creating giant cells
this is typically a common indication of
cobalt lung or hard metal lung disease
this disease comes from inhaling metals
in powder form notably tungsten carbide
and cobalt common symptoms include heavy
coughing tightness in the chest and
shortness of breath currently there are
no known cures for this disease however
medications such as steroids can be
prescribed to help with coffee when
someone is diagnosed with this condition
it's routine for doctors to look into
occupational factors like regular
exposure to powdered metals which you
find in jobs like metal production
however the patient worked as a dog
walker and showed no history of exposure
the whole case seemed like a mystery
until it was brought up to the attention
of the doctors that the patient had been
vaping THC for months leading up to her
illness the device she used was a Zen
pen I hadn't heard about this brand
until reading about the case but from
what I found they offer 510 threaded pen
style devices which are commonly used
for vaping cannabis the kids don't come
prefilled so the user would either have
to fill it up themselves or purchase a
prefilled cartridge doctors tested the
oil and her device and found several
metals including nickel aluminum lead
and cobalt I think there are a few
possible explanations for what happened
here firstly she may have been using a
counterfeit product if she was buying
either cannabis oil or prefilled
cartridges off the street they may have been tainted
we know vitamin E acetate is the main
issue we've seen but there is the
possibility of other contaminants
entering because on the black-market
there aren't any manufacturing or safety
standards my next theory is she may have
been using a cartridge that was severely
burned out most cartridges for cannabis
oil make use of ceramic clothes because
they work well with thick oils and lasts
longer the reason we change clothes is
because over time they can get gunked-up
and begin to burn with ceramic oils
overuse can result in the ceramic breaking and releasing
silica dust which can lead to symptoms
similar to what we're seeing with cobalt
lung and finally it may be totally
unrelated to vaping one report states
the patients smoked for many years but
has since quit this case is still in its
early stages so we don't know everything
about the patient's history or other
factors that may have led to her illness
there's only been one reported case and
tests are so ongoing
